Light and Darkness

The world is sleeping, and the earth is dark,

The lamps are out, the window lights are gone:

Was that a bird that twittered in its sleep,

Or was it but my fancy, here alone?

Who said the earth is dark- the Moon has come

To silver many a tump and hollow place;

Dark Earth and Moonlight- and I see a child

Stroke with her tender hand a blinded face.
